Race weekend planned in Champaign

Champaign will be the place to be for a marathon soon.

The Illinois Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, and will be held on the campus of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

The three-day event begins on a Thursday, with most of the indoor events taking place in the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC). On the Thursday, events include a Health & Fitness Expo; and registration for the Youth Run. Participants may also pick up goody Bags and shirts, as well as official race guides, numbers, and chips. The Green Street Mile, a mile-long race on Green Street, the campus's main street, is held Thursday night.

The same events repeat on Friday, without the Green Street Mile. New events on this day include speakers, a pasta feed, and three races: the 4th Mile, the 5K National Anthem, and a 5K Run/Walk.

Saturday is the main race day, bringing with it six races, including the full marathon, along with a half-marathon, a wheelchair half-marathon, a marathon relay, a Youth Run, and a 10K Run/Walk. All the marathons will be started in waves, meaning the runners will start in groups, depending on their qualifying time. A Coffee and Bagel Bite Bar will be available first thing in the morning, and a post-race party is planned to wind up the weekend in style.

The Illinois Marathon weekend is April 23-25, and banner printing is often used to create course markers for events like this.
