The Champaign Park District is getting ready to move forward with the construction of the Martens Center, which is in the Human Kinetics Park, but officials are not sure whether the new facility will have a pool.
According to Laura Auteberry, the director of development for the park district, over $10m has already been raised to build the Martens Center, with $4m of the total donated by Rainer Martens and his wife Julie. In addition, the district has committed to providing another $2m, bringing the total to around $12m, enough to construct the community center, but not any extra amenities, such as a pool, that would be popular in the community.
It's estimated that another $2.5m would be needed to add a pool to the plans, and since starting construction immediately would mean no aquatics area could be built, the start of the construction process has been slightly delayed.
Fundraising efforts will be ongoing for the next few weeks, and the amount raised during these efforts will determine the final design of the center. Officials in situations like this could use poster printing to create Signs calling attention to the fundraising drive.
If a pool is constructed, it could be used by lap swimmers, host therapy and water fitness classes, and hold swimming lessons. There would also be open swim times, and the facility could be used for parties, she said.
