Local gastropub on the move

Farren's Pub and Eatery, which first opened its doors in 2000, recently announced it is planning to move, leaving behind its basement quarters on Randolph Street and taking over the spot on Walnut Street Radio Maria recently left.

Radio Maria was a tapas restaurant that shut down in December, approximately the same time Bacaro also closed, leaving two prime spaces on Walnut vacant. Farren's has stepped in to take one of them, though it is a pub and hamburger restaurant, unlike its predecessor.

Farren's has been in the basement on Randolph for 19 years, and from that location, squeezed in between the Art Theater and a parking garage, has had a successful operation. In addition, Farren's has been serving alcoholic beverages to patrons of the Virginia Theatre since 2014.

Farren's has been named as having the best burgers in Illinois by TripAdvisor. ‘The Buzz’, the community magazine for Champaign-Urbana, has named Farren's the best burger in town, and another publication, ‘College Raptor’, put Farren's on its list as one of the 15 best burger places in the country. The restaurant has been around long enough to have many regulars, which has led it to experiment with different dishes. Among its creations are burgers topped with pulled pork, and a grilled scallop salad.
