Legendary folk-rock star coming to Champaign

One of the most celebrated folk singers of today is on his way to Champaign.

Gordon Lightfoot is Canadian, and both a singer and songwriter. He has enjoyed international success in several musical genres, including country, folk-rock, and folk, and is often viewed as a leader in the development of the folk-pop sound that became popular during the 1960s and 1970s. He studied at the Westlake College of Music in Hollywood in the late 1950s, but returned to Canada, which is his primary residence, though he frequently works in the United States.

Lightfoot has had many hits, but only one, “Sundown,” went to number one in the U.S. He is perhaps best known for the ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” based on the sinking of a Great Lakes ore carrier in 1975.

His current tour is “80 Years Strong,” a reference to the singer's age, and sheer longevity in the music business. A review of a recent concert called the artist “special,” and said that the singer “constantly demonstrated a supreme knack for his craft” through a set that included approximately 24 songs.
