Gordon Lightfoot will be at the Virginia Theatre for one performance later this year. Canadian-born Lightfoot began performing when he was in elementary school. He studied jazz orchestration and composition in California for two years, supporting himself by singing on demonstration records. He also wrote and arranged commercial jingles, but missed Canada and returned to Toronto, where he continues to live. However, he also works frequently in the United States.
In his career, Lightfoot has released 19 studio albums, 16 albums of his greatest hits, three albums of live performances, and 46 singles. Wide-spread recognition came in the 1960s and 1970s, as his songs went to the top of the US Hot 100, or the AC charts. His output at the time included classics like “Sundown,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” and the song that might be his most famous, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” Several of Lightfoot's albums have gone to either multi-platinum or gold status throughout the world. He cites folk musicians such as The Weavers and Pete Seeger as influences on him.
