Jarling's Custard Cup, a favorite of Champaign residents for decades, is getting set to reopen.
The custard shop has been in business on West Kirby Avenue in Champaign since 1983, and garnered legions of fans, who were no doubt disappointed when the original owners said they planned to sell the business. The Jarlings closed their shop at the end of March, reopened with shorter hours, then closed for good, leaving customers wondering what would happen next.
Last Sunday, however, the new owners said the shop could reopen very soon. It has been purchased by a group of investors that includes a number of former Illini coaches: Ron Turner coached football, while Bruce Weber and Tom Siegel both coached basketball. Also in the group is the Sholem family of Champaign. All of the investors have roots in the area.
The Jarlings themselves—Christy, Doug, and their son, Dylan—will stay on to help with the process of transition. The new owners, who collectively go by the name Alpha Custard Cup, say they intend to keep all the favorites on the menu. In addition, they will shortly be hiring, including three or four people for managerial positions, and as many as 22 hourly workers.
The shop will be open from noon until 10:00 pm daily, and the group is hoping to open this coming Saturday, May 7. The new owners could create fun Banners to hang at the shop to celebrate the occasion.Get a Free Quote for Banners
