Gordon Lightfoot has built an international reputation as a master of folk song. He began his rise to fame in the 1960s, releasing songs such as “Steel Rail Blues,” “Early Morning Rain,” and “For Lovin' Me.” His “Ribbon of Darkness” went to the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Country chart.
He began to find himself on the Canadian charts in 1962 with “(Remember Me) I'm the One,” and began charting elsewhere. In the 1970s, he made it to No. 1 on either the AC or US Hot 100 chart with such hits as “Rainy Day People,” “Carefree Highway,” “Sundown,” and “If You Could Read My Mind.” In 1976, he released the song perhaps most closely associated with him, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” The song is based on a true event—the sinking of the ore carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior in November, 1975. He has been thrilling audiences for decades.
