What's Happening in Champaign, IL…

Champaign welcomes new sub shop

A new sandwich shop will be open soon in Champaign, which will no doubt please students at the University of Illinois campus there.

According to a September 5, 2014 news item, Doughbelly Subs, which closed its Mahomet location earlier this year, is moving to the Village at the Crossing; a center located in southwest Champaign.

Doug Bewley, who owns Doughbelly, says he thought his store might find “greener pastures” in Champaign, which has a larger population and thus, a larger pool of potential customers for his enterprise.

The menu will change slightly. Although Doughbelly will continue to offer its submarine sandwiches - which feature roast beef, ham, and white-meat turkey and chicken - it will add new items, including fried chicken. Along with the chicken, the shop will offer traditional side dishes like baked beans, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and coleslaw. Salads will still be available from the menu, but the location will also have a salad bar at which customers can make their own.

Bewley said he hopes the new location will be able to open this month, he expects to employ between eight and ten people, and he will provide delivery to the University of Illinois campus. He plans to provide outdoor seating during the warmer months.

Bewley could work with a flyer printing company to create handouts, including a coupon, to be distributed near the location the day of the opening.
