Tnemec, a company that makes resins, liners, and other coatings often used by municipalities to paint their water towers, has named Champaign County's tank one of its top 12 for 2016.
The company considered 240 water tanks before naming the winners, with the water tank in Ann Arbor, Michigan taking the crown this year. Tnemec has been running the contest, which includes a people's choice award, since 2006.
The Champaign County water tank, an elevated structure, holds one million gallons, and is on Hundman Drive in Champaign. It has earned a place in Tnemec's yearly water tank calendar. The award-winning tank has two logos: one is ‘Illinois American Water’ and the other says ‘You're Welcome’.
The new water tank cost more than $3m, but Dave Farrar, the senior operations manager for the Champaign County District of Illinois American Water, the investment is well worth it, since it will provide customers with reliable water service. The new tank holds enough water to supply businesses, residents, and fire protection personnel adequately.
The tower consists of a steel tank sitting atop a tall, concrete shaft. The tank was assembled at ground level before being raised to its current position. Farrar says that using a concrete shaft will save on future maintenance costs, and was less expensive than other materials.
