Uber, a company seeking to change the way taxis operate, is starting service in Champaign-Urbana.

After launching its operations on February 15, the firm celebrated with an event at Enterprise Works, a business incubator in the Research Park at the University of Illinois.

Uber's system is based on apps. Patrons can download the Uber app to their phones and, when they want a taxi, they use the app to request one. There is no need to call a dispatcher or try to flag down a cab on the street.

Once ordered, they can track the taxi's progress to their location via GPS, which is also the means the driver uses to find the patron. In addition, the app allows the patron to see the available cars, the driver's photo and license plate number, and model and make of the car. The rider pays for the transaction when the car arrives.

Don Gerard, Governor Bruce Rauner, and Chris Taylor (Uber's managing director for the state of Illinois) were all present at the event. Taylor recognized the university in particular for its commitment to innovation, while Mayor Gerard said he believes the new service will provide safe, inexpensive rides for residents, with university students standing to benefit in particular.

Champaign city officials might consider working with a postcard printing company on a mailer for residents describing the service.
