When a community faces a disaster, it gets its best results when it responds as a community. An upcoming class, scheduled in Urbana, near Champaign, will help devise a plan.
The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) is offering a course called “Whole Community Planning for Disaster” that explains how and why organizations – including local associations, non-traditional disaster non-profit organizations, community organizations, faith-based organizations, private businesses and the private sector, and government – can take part in a planning process to improve a community’s resilience.
The course provides a detailed explanation of how an entire community can devise an inclusive emergency plan. The IAFC encourages communities hosting a class to invite a wide range of organizations to attend, from first responders to local non-profits, to any community members who might be interested. Events like this are a perfect occasion for attendees to exchange Business Cards.
Placing a strong emphasis on the inclusion of people with disabilities, and other functional and access needs, in every phase of the planning process, the IAFC further encourages hosts to demonstrate their own interest through a cooperative effort.
The IAFC is a worldwide organization whose members are experts in public safety, search and rescue, natural disasters, hazardous material spills, terrorism response, emergency medicine, and firefighting.
The “Whole Community Planning for Disaster” meeting is scheduled for July 22, from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, at the ILEAS Training Center on Main Street in Urbana, a quick drive from Champaign.
