Members of the Scolopax genus, American woodcocks are a species of ground-feeding birds that can be found in the Champaign area, and a special upcoming event will introduce them to the public.
While they are shy and not often seen, woodcocks engage in a special performance during the first weeks of spring. With some luck, attendees will be able to view this “sky dance” as part of an activity for those age 15 and up to experience along with an adult.
The function will offer an introduction to woodcocks, as well as their ecology and life cycle. The participants will discover what makes them special, and this portion of the activity will take place indoors. After this, the group will follow an accessible path to the prairie located at the venue, where they will hopefully be able to observe woodcocks performing their spring dance. This introduction to the life and times of the American woodcock will welcome registrants on Wednesday, March 20. Meadowbrook Park will be the venue for the session, which will start at 6:45 pm.
