Champaign celebration to open summer reading challenge

For many, curling up with a good book is one of life's simple joys, and in Champaign, a summer reading program will encourage the community to enjoy this pastime.

The Champaign Public Library has planned its annual summer reading challenge initiative, and it will be getting the season off to an exciting start with its Summer Reading Kickoff Party. It will welcome all ages, and some special guests are on the list of attendees. The online listing notes that the event has been made possible through support from the Library Friends program.

The fun will begin for the guests when they arrive at the library, as the lobby will contain a signup station for the summer reading program, as well as a giveaway of themed Promotional Products. In the Robeson Pavilion, they will be able to participate in a watercolor painting make-and-take, and live music performed by local talent will help keep the excitement levels high.

Along with the other plans for the occasion, the function will feature a visit by Pete the Cat and also Mother Goose.

This kick-off to an initiative that supports community literacy building will be on offer on Sunday, May 21. It will begin at 2:00 pm, and signups for the Summer Reading Challenge itself will be accepted starting on Monday, May 15.
