The number of breast milk banks throughout the country is rising, and recognising an increasing need to help mothers with medical issues affecting their lactation, a new site is set to open up in Champaign this week.
With stocks of pasteurized breast milk low, local banks are seen as a vital service for the community.
In many ways, the milk banks operate like a blood bank, with donors being carefully screened before the milk they are offering is cleared for donation.
As well as being checked for communicable diseases and certain listed medical conditions, donors receive screening for tobacco use, drugs and alcohol and other potentially detrimental lifestyle choices.
It is a rightly thorough process, according to the milk bank's Carissa Hawkins, who explained:
“We need to keep the milk that we provide to hospitals as a medicine for really ill babies as pure and as clean as possible.”
New donors are always needed however, with Carissa continuing to explain:
“Our milk supply is never guaranteed because just as a mom’s milk supply is never guaranteed.”
Opening on June 20th, it is hoped that the Champaign drop off (CUPHD) will encourage mothers that are able in the area to donate, with poster printing likely being used alongside other media from Print companies to ensure the word is put out.Get a Free Quote for Print
