Big band sound returns to Champaign

One of the most celebrated of the big bands is on the way to Champaign.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will be at the Virginia Theatre later this year, in a performance that is sure to bring back memories for older audience members and introduce younger people to music they may never have heard before.

Glenn Miller formed his orchestra in 1938, the second dance band he created. They went on to become one of the most successful bands of the “swing” era of the 1940s, putting a total of 121 singles on the charts, 69 in the Top Ten, and 16 at Number 1. Among the band’s most famous hits—which sold over a million copies each—are “String of Pearls,” “In the Mood,” and “Moonlight Serenade.”

The original Glenn Miller Orchestra disbanded in 1942, but the current orchestra continues his legacy. The group was formed in 1956 and has been touring and performing since then. A review called a concert a “virtuoso performance”:

“. . . the vibrant richness of the full orchestra . . . filled the large historic theater to the rafters (they don’t call them “big bands” for nothing!) . . . the jazzy swinging rhythms . . . sensational instrumental solos . . . demonstrating a flawless command of the genre.”

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will be in Champaign on November 13, at 7.00 pm. Events like this are often publicized via poster printing.
