Backpack project for the needy kicks off soon

Officials from the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen announced that the sixth annual Holiday Backpack Project will start soon.

Members of the community are asked to fill Backpacks and bring them to the organization, which then distributes them to people in need.

This year, the Soup Kitchen will be distributing backpacks only to adults, citing the fact that Champaign-Urbana has proven to be very generous to children, and helps them through projects like Shop with a Cop. However, adults are often forgotten at the holidays.

The Soup Kitchen asks that backpacks be new, or in good condition, and clean. It further requests that donations include toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant, as well as items to help people stay warm in cold weather, like hats, scarves, gloves, regular underwear, and long underwear. Since these backpacks will be given away, the Soup Kitchen asks for brand new items.

The project starts December 7, and runs through December 16. Residents are asked to drop off their backpacks at the Soup Kitchen, 124 White Street, Champaign, between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. The donations are tax deductible, and Forms will be available at the drop off points. Other drop-off points are Ellen Harms, at 705 South Elm Boulevard, and Pam Hagle's, 713 South Elm Boulevard.

Soup Kitchen officials could work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for community residents, informing them of the drive.
