Music lovers of a certain age will remember when Simon & Garfunkel turned out a seemingly never-ending series of hits, including Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Sound of Silence and Mrs. Robinson. The two met in elementary school, and by 1957 were writing their own material and performing under the name Tom & Jerry. They were most popular in the 1960s, when their records topped the charts, and they remain one of the world's most influential musical groups.
Garfunkel is on his In Close-Up tour, along with a keyboardist and guitarist. He will be performing some of his solo hits, songs from the Simon & Garfunkel days, playing and singing covers of songs by other artists, and reading excerpts from his book, “What Is It All but Luminous?” Organizers of events like this can use poster printing to advertise the show.
A recent review on Spectrum Culture says the 77-year-old singer may not hit every note perfectly, but the magic's still there:
“Yet, that golden voice that floats over songs such as “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “The Sound of Silence” still remains . . . . Garfunkel still sings with the sound of a younger man.”
Garfunkel will appear at the Virginia Theater in Champaign on June 22. The show starts at 8.00 pm, and tickets are on sale now.
