On April 9, middle and high school students from the area were able to see what it might be like to study computer science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
The one-day event featured classes taught by students currently at the university, and included activities such as competing in a paper airplane-making contest, and constructing a ‘chatbot’.
The day was free, and many participants said they had an enjoyable experience, and left with a positive impression of the University. They were given T-Shirts as mementos, and ate at popular local restaurants such as Maize and the Black Dog before being returned to their home towns via prearranged bus transport.
This type of outreach program has proven valuable to UIUC, since introducing students to what life is like on a college campus can be the deciding factor on which university they choose to attend. The program, known as CS @ ILLINOIS SAIL, brings younger students in contact with those in university who are enjoying their educational experience. The hope is that prospective students will be inspired and hope to find the same fulfillment in their own college careers.
The university, and in particular its computer science department, might work with a brochure printing company to design a piece specifically about computer classes, and distribute it to those who attended the program.
