City could change laws on fireworks

Officials in Coeur d’Alene are looking to keep neighborhoods quiet while respecting people's right to party by having designated zones for fireworks on specific dates.

According to Councilor Christie Wood, the number of fireworks going off all over Coeur d'Alene on two major holidays is getting excessive. She suggests:

“If we could explore maybe a designated area in the city for families to bring children to light off legal fireworks, twice a year, January 1 and Fourth of July, just maybe that would curb some of it in the neighborhoods. That way, everybody wins.”

She requested that a future City Council meeting include a discussion on what would be voluntary fireworks zones.

Councilor wood is not alone in her concerns about the light and noise effects of fireworks. At a council meeting, Councilor Dan Gookin presented a letter from a long-term resident of Coeur d'Alene who feels that the many fireworks disrupt the serenity, startle dogs, and have an impact on PTSD-affected soldiers.

Presently, only fireworks sold bought from certain vendors with permission, or those bearing the "Safe and Sane" label, are permitted. Graphic Design Services can be used to design informative labels for products.

Wood hopes such conversations will result in potential fireworks areas for families to enjoy together, so that the celebrations can continue without negatively affecting residents.
