Davenport appoints new head of fire department

The next Chief of the Davenport Fire Department has been announced as Jeff VanderWiere.

VanderWiere has extensive experience in fire and emergency management as well as in project management, strategic planning, budgeting, and policy development. Since 2020, he has served in Portage, Michigan as Division Chief-Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Chief, and the Deputy Director of Public Safety for the Portage Department of Public Safety.

From 1996 to 2020, he held the ranks of Public Safety Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Assistant Chief in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the Department of Public Safety.

Such appointments often call for business card printing services.

VanderWiere will oversee the department, which has two civilians and 135 sworn personnel. There are seven stations throughout the city with three truck companies and eight engine companies. VanderWiere said he is looking forward to building on the strong legacy of service of the department by strengthening partnerships in the community and advocating for its firefighters by ensuring they have the support, training, and tools they need to serve the public.

There will be an open house to meet the new fire chief from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Fire Station 3 on Thursday October 16. VanderWiere will start his new position on Monday November 3. He will be sworn in at the meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday November 5.
