Camp Invention is a non-profit camp that teaches STEM, and it has just gone virtual.
The event included Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation giving tuition scholarships to 13 campers, including Chloe Duck who is a second-grader at Ruth Hill Elementary in Newnan. It was her first time attending Camp Invention and she was very happy with the activities. She said that her favorite activity was decorating and experimenting with a hot glue gun.
Traditionally, the camp is hosted at different elementary schools across Coweta County. The lockdown made it difficult to host the camp this year, so the organizers decided to host it online. This year’s virtual camp was led by Stephen Simon who is a teacher at Poplar Road Elementary School, the school that was supposed to host it this year.
The camp was held by meeting up on Google Meet up to three times daily. The coaches would guide the campers through the day’s activities and encourage them to go outside and play with their inventions. The campers received a mailer that had equipment such as duct Tape, masking Tape, scissors, glue, and feathers. T-Shirts and other Promotional Products could be included in such mailers.
Other coaches who led the virtual camp were Alicia Porras, who is Poplar Road Elementary’s counselor, and Mary Thompson, who is a teacher for advanced content at Ruth Hill Elementary School. In total 46 campers from kindergarten to grade 5 attended.
