Voters in South Cobb will be able to determine this November whether to incorporate Mableton into a city.
Representative Erica Thomas sponsored the measure. The effort to create the city of Mableton is the only one of its kind that the state Senate supported unanimously. There were only two members of the Georgia House of Representatives who voted against the bill.
The boundaries of the city will extend beyond the historic community core and cover most of South Cobb, with Smyrna to the east, Austell and Powder Springs to the west, and just beyond the East-West Connector in the north. Leaders in Mableton plan that the scope of the city will be limited. They will oversee zoning and planning, enforcement of code, and the parks, and provide trash collection. The county will continue to provide other services such as public safety. Such local governments can provide additional information about services provided with flyer printing.
Supporters of the cityhood movement say that their voice is insufficient at the county level. Currently Mableton has one county district commissioner per 191,000 people whereas a city council in Mableton would have one representative for every 13,000 residents. This would provide residents with more control and an increased sense of community.
The vote on Mableton will be held during the general election on Tuesday, November 8.
