Researcher in Orlando recognized for extraordinary contributions

A researcher at the Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) of the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, Shawn Burke, has been selected as a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).

This is an honor that is one of the highest in the field of industrial-organizational psychology and is awarded to those who have made lasting and significant contributions to leadership, research and application in the field.

Burke’s exceptional contributions to advancing the pract8ice and science of industrial-organizational psychology were recognized in addition to her impact on the professional community. Burke expressed her honor to be named a SIOP fellow. She added that this reflects the collaborative efforts of partners, researchers, and students with whom she has worked and the importance of advancing decision-making and training in complex environments.

Burker leads the Team Research and Adaptability in Complex Environments Lab at IST. Her work there focuses on adaptive training, team performance, and human-centered approaches to complex systems. Advancements in high-stakes environments across healthcare, industry, and defense have been supported by her research which reinforces the leadership of UCF in training, simulation, and modeling.

Executive director of UCF IST, Carolina Cruz-Neira, said that this honor not only recognizes the scientific contributions of Dr. Burke but her mentorship and leadership in the research community.
