Over a half-million dollars will be given to the city of Orlando for programs that will help low-income seniors and high school students.
The Operation AmeriCorps program of the city, which is a non-profit organization\, will receive $652,727 in funding from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for service and volunteering for initiatives that support these two groups of people. Announcements of such needed funding are often made known throughout a community with flyer printing.
The amount of $337,727 of the grant will go towards the 15 AmeriCorps members of the city to start counseling and advocacy for juniors and seniors at the Jones, Edgewater, and Colonial High Schools. Over 700 students are expected to benefit from this initiative.
The remaining funds will go towards the AmeriCorps Senior Companion program at the non-profit Volunteers for Community Impact. This will enable 35 volunteers to be added who will help seniors with running errands, offering championship, and providing transportation to medical appointments in Osceola, Seminole, and Orange counties.
Congressman Maxwell Frost expressed his thrill that the community of Orlando will be receiving these federal funds from AmeriCorps. He said that these funds will provide resources needed by students in marginalized communities to complete their education and by seniors of with low incomes who are striving to maintain their independence.
