South Florida station turns 70

On March 21, 1949 South Florida station WTVJ came on the air as the first station in Florida – an anniversary that will be recognized this week.

The station, which ended up in Miramar, began its time at 316 N. Miami Ave in Miami. The city is so loyal to the station that Miami’s mayor, Francis Suarez, claimed March 21 as NBC 6/WTVJ Day during a live broadcast.

Anniversaries and public events are a good time for businesses to work with Print shops to obtain printing services to commemorate special occasions, Items such as promotional Pens are always a big hit for those attending events.

The station will air a special tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm to look back at the station’s history and some of its former employees. In 1949 the station was seen in black and white and covered weather sports and news.

Memorable news coverage will include the reports given live during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. With hurricanes being common in the area, the station reporters braved the storm and took cover to report the news so residents would know firsthand what was happening.

Originally, it was a CBS station and then had the prestigious honor of being the first to report from the Goodyear Blimp. This was quite a feat due to the weight of the equipment needed to do the broadcast. The station switched over to NBC in 1987, and in 2000 the station moved to Miramar onto a six-acre site, which is a central point for its coverage area today.
