New Kiwanis club founded in Miramar

The Miramar area will be home to a new Kiwanis chapter, with aims to provide support to children and the elderly during trying times.

The new club, called The Kiwanis Club of East Pines Miramar, was organized by Karen Harvey, who will serve as its first president, as well as Anthony D’Oyley, Barry Smallhome, and Dionne Bryan. While Kiwanis is a large and well-known organization making up over 600,000 members worldwide, it allows for local chapters to customize their own operations and projects. The Miramar club will be focusing on initiatives to support local children. This will include scholarships, food baskets for families that need them, and back-to-school drives, in addition to support for the elderly.

East Pines Miramar will join the existing Kiwanis Club of Miramar/Pembroke Pines, which has been organizing charitable events in South Florida since 1991. Organizations like this typically use tools like brochure printing and social media to promote their events and explain the charitable causes they contribute to. Co-founder D’Oyley appealed to Miramar residents to join the fledgling organization:

“We understand the changing needs of today’s busy volunteers and encourage members to give time when they can, whether that’s at a service project or at a meeting. We hope that men and women of all ages will join us and help make a difference for children in our community.”

The Kiwanis Club of East Pines Miramar is now meeting Mondays via Zoom, and will be looking to hold its first charitable events in the coming months.
