Miramar to celebrate those of Haitian descent

Commissioner Darline B. Riggs and Mayor Wayne Messam of Miramar are planning to hold a special party with the Consulate General of the Republic in Haiti later this month to recognize Haitian Heritage Month.

Musicians from the Caribbean country will be performing. There will also be an art exhibit, an honor guard, and many other special features. Former Miss Haiti and actress Sandra Justice will be the host of the celebration.

Mayor Messam commented that it is a pleasure to host this evening once again with the Office of the Consulate General of the Republic in Haiti, and to co-host it with Commissioner Riggs.

Commisioner Riggs added that as she is the first Haitian American to be elected in Miramar and Broward County, the event has a special meaning for her.

As compared to the United States Census taken 1980 when there were 1,849 people of Haitian descent lived in Broward county, the 2010 Census reports over 84,000 people of Haitian ancestry now in the County.

The reception will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. at the Miramar Cultural Center on Monday, May 23. It is a free community event and is no doubt being publicized with the use of Flyers and mailers that can be sent out to the Haitian community encouraging them to make an appearance.
