The Miramar Police Department recently moved into its new headquarters.
The three-story, 65,000 square-foot building is adjacent to City Hall and will also house the Emergency Operations Center for the city. As the old police headquarters was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, this new facility will be able to withstand hurricanes with a rating of Category 5 and has full backup power.
According to Mayor Wayne Messam, the latest technology has been installed in the building so the police will be better equipped to protect the community.
The new building will also be able to house all of the detectives, street officers, and other members of the staff and have indoor holding cells. As the Miramar Police have been renting space for the past 11 years, suspects would be questioned in patrol cars or in borrowed space from the Sheriff's Office of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale.
The first floor will have some mixed use space, including restaurants and retail shops. There is also a large community room for holding public meetings.
Construction on the building began in 2014 at a cost of $23 million.
The city no doubt will want to inform the community of the new police headquarters and its features by using poster printing services or to create other materials that can be distributed throughout the city.
