A Broward County tradition will return this year with a special chess event hosted by the city’s mayor Wayne M. Messam.
The Mayors’ Chess Challenge started in Sunrise in the early 2010s, with multiple mayors from Broward County squaring off against each other, including then Miramar Mayor Lori Mosely, North Lauderdale Mayor Jack Brady, Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick, and Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper. It is now an annual event in Miramar, inviting participants of all ages and levels. The goal of the event is to encourage students from the county to take up chess at the scholastic level and is part of the Miramar municipal government’s outreach effort to local constituents.
The Chess Challenge will offer Miramar residents the chance to meet the Mayor and play chess against a competitor of a similar skill level. Last year’s event, hosted in early March, featured dozens of games happening simultaneously. The ancient game of chess is still a popular and universally accessible test of wits, with tournaments regularly happening at levels ranging from youth and school competitions to high-stakes professional events streamed to large audiences. Whatever the level, such events are often promoted through means like banner printing and specialist websites.
The 2021 edition of the Mayors’ Chess Challenge is set to take place on the morning of October 23 at Vizcaya Park in Miramar.
