Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne recently held a ceremony in which she recognized the contribution of several members of the Caribbean-American community.
The awards were given as part of Caribbean American Heritage Month, in a small private ceremony. The recipients were Michael D. Young of the Belize American Chamber of Commerce, Allauddin “Allan” Baksh of Almir Real Estate, Yolanda Henry from the Miss Miami Broward Carnival Pageant, Elizabeth “Prisca” Allick of the Grenada Cultural & Civic Association of South Florida, and three recipients from CASA WEPA, a local Puerto Rican association. Between them, they represent backgrounds ranging from all across the Caribbean region, from Trinidad to Guyana.
The ceremony had special resonance for Colbourne, who is herself of Jamaican descent and was born in Panama. Recognition like this can be valuable to recipients, being referenced on Business Cards and Letterheads, and helping to make connections with other community members. Colbourne expressed the value to the city, noting that the area is a diverse one, and that the local community is enriched by the sharing and understanding of cultures.
Caribbean American Heritage Month is typically celebrated in June across the country. While the celebrations had to be more muted this year due to the need for social distancing, past years in Miramar have seen musical events and Caribbean-flavored Fourth of July celebrations.
