Sealand, part of the shipping company Maersk based in Denmark, opened its headquarters in Miramar in January and will be opening a seaport in Broward County later this month.
The route at the seaport at Port Everglades will increase the amount of cargo that Florida East Coast Railway trucks and trains carry in and out of the port. The company also plans to invest at least $350,000 at the 13,000 sq. ft site and create at least 65 jobs. Government incentives that included grants for training employees were given to the company, and it may be using some of this money for the creation of digital Business Cards for these new employees.
Sealand was formed by Maersk in 2014 to handle trade in North and South America, and has similar companies for Europe and Asia.
There is also a plan to widen and deepen Port Everglades. The port’s main channels would go from 42 to 48 feet, and part of the Intracoastal Waterway would also be deepened and widened, to accommodate larger cargo ships that now navigate trade routes around the world.
According to Steven Cernak, Port Director, the immediate reason for the expansion is to better serve existing markets. In the long run, although the port’s primary business remains north-south, the port expansion could increase trade with Asia and business through the expanded Panama Canal.Get a Free Quote for Business Cards
