Miramar brings back city scholarship program

A program offering graduating Miramar high school students help affording post-secondary schooling will return for a fourth year this spring.

The scholarship is a project of the Miramar Education Advisory Board. The Board will award $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors who reside in the city of Miramar, no matter where they attend school, as part of its EAB Scholarship Fund. The program has awarded eight scholarships over the past three year, making a total of $7,500 in donations. Programs like these, often promoted using brochure printing and other tools, help many students from less prosperous backgrounds have access to a college education.

Applications will include short descriptions of themselves, challenges they have overcome during their education, and ways they think the Education Advisory Board (EAB)could make a greater impact in their community. The latter elements is designed to help the Board use the process to gather feedback about their efforts and how they can better help students. Applicants must also have a minimum 2.0 GPA. The EAB’s scholarship fund is supported by donations from local businesses, residents, and board members.

Applications for the Miramar Education Advisory Board Scholarship Fund are due by online submission on April 16, with recipients being notified within a week. The selected students will be recognized at the City Commission meeting on May 19.
