Miramar High School’s boys’ basketball team, the Patriots, are champions once again after triumphing in the Big 8 title game.
The Patriots, the defending state champions in the 7A classification (for schools with 1,932 to 2,331 students), had played just five games going into the division tournament, all against non-conference opponents due to the shortened high school season. It was a challenging run for Miramar, who had to hold on to a narrow lead in the semi-final, ultimately winning 47-44 over Hallandale. In the finals, they met Western, who were playing in their first ever conference championship game.
The Patriots were able to break down the tough Western defense and secured a dominant 72-50 win, led by a 23-point effort by junior DeShawn Jean-Charles. Faheim Meran and Khamaury McMillan also lit up the score sheet with 21 and 16 points respectively.
The title is just Miramar’s second in the Big 8 tournament, which features schools from across Broward County. High schools typically use tools like banner printing and trophy cases to honor student successes like this, leaving a marker long after the athletes have graduated.
