Kathleen Woods-Richardson, City Manager, recently appointed Dexter M. Williams as the new chief of police of Miramar.
He is a familiar face to the residents of the city, having served on the force for over 20 years. He will be leading the 220 sworn police officers of the city and 80 civilian employees.
Williams commented that is both humbled and honored to be part of Miramar, where he also lives. Although Miramar does not require its chief of police to be a resident, he feels it is a win-win situation for everyone, as he gets to monitor the public safety of the community of which he is a part, and is able to see the quality-of-life side that he would want for his family.
He plans to pursue community policing policies as his objectives for the department. He also wants to build trust in police work and crime reduction, and to pay more attention to officer education and training so that new ideas can be brought into the community.
Williams joined the Miramar police department in 1993 after working for two years as a police officer in Pembroke Pines. He has lead numerous divisions in the department and been promoted several times.
The city could work with a flyer printing company to create a handout for distribution with more information for the community about Williams’ background and his goals for the department.
