Jamaican culture and heritage celebrated in Miramar

December 2015 has been declared by Wayne Messam, the Mayor of the City of Miramar in Florida, as “Jamaicans.com Month” in Miramar.

The Mayor said in his official proclamation that the trailblazing website contains invaluable entertainment and cultural information, with 250,000 monthly viewers who turn to the website for its promotion of the food, culture, and people of Jamaica around the world. By recognizing the website with this special honor, the Mayor is hoping to cherish the legacy of Xavier Murphy, who founded it in 1995, for many years to come.

Founder Murphy commented that the site has become a focal point for those who live outside of Jamaica and have Jamaican ancestry, as it helps this group of people to stay in touch with their Jamaican roots. He added that thanks to changes in technology, the website has been able to grow over the past 20 years, with 77,000 followers on various social media channels as well.

The celebrations for the website’s 20th anniversary began on December 4 in South Florida in Pembroke Pines at the Grand Palm Resorts. On December 10, the celebrations continued at The Ripe Jamaican Restaurant in Mount Vernon, New York, where the chef/owner is Nigel Spence of Food Network fame.

The city may turn to banner printing companies to create items that can be displayed to promote this special achievement and the celebrations.
