A runaway dog was recently returned to her owners after a six-month absence.
At around the turn of the year, Sassy the Pomeranian dog lived up to her name by somehow escaping her owner's fenced yard as she headed out for a little adventure.
The small dog disappeared without a trace and was not spotted until June 17 in Pembroke Pines. It was then that a local police officer noticed the dog while out on patrol and retrieved if from the roadside.
A microchip scan revealed who the owners were of the fluffy little dog and they were quickly notified. The couple's daughter instantly made the trek to retrieve the greatly missed pet. It was a long ride since Sassy had managed to travel approximately 200 miles during her six-month absence.
The family is now happily reunited and thankful the dog was uninjured. There is no way of knowing if someone may have taken her in during the previous six months only for the escape artist to disappear again.
A runaway pet is not an unusual event. Over 1,300 pets have been reunited with their owners in the last five years thanks to the Pembroke Pines police department and the municipal Animal Assistance Program. Microchipping and effective advertising of the loss may help to speed up the trip back home, and poster and flyer printing campaigns can help raise awareness of missing animals.
