The Leesburg Lightening has said it is in “desperate need” of families to house its players.
As a summer league premier franchise, the Leesburg Lightening has found success over the past 12 seasons. The support of the community has played a big part in the team’s success, including residents who have volunteered to be host families for the two months the team plays in the area.
The role of a host family is to provide accommodations during the summer months, including a bedroom, bathroom, and access to a washer and dryer. Families also provide some meals although most players either eat dinner at the ballpark or on their way home. Transportation to/from games is not expected of the host families.
Local businesses could help the league find host families by using poster printing services to create Posters to display in their windows. Typically, the league needs housing for approximately 20 players but as of May 9, they had only seven homes lined up.
The players who are placed in homes are directed to treat their host families with respect and be role models in the community. Players who do not live up to the leagues standards are sent home.
Families wishing to provide housing for the players should contact the host family coordinator for the league, Erin Burtoft, at lighteningmomerin@gmail.com. The homes will be needed starting the last week of May.
The team plays their first game on June 1 at 7:00 pm against Winter Garden Squeeze, at Pat Thomas Stadium-Buddy Lowe Field. Admission to the games is free.
