The history of a Dunedin neighborhood will be presented next month during a sunset tour.
The Victoria Drive Sunset Stroll will be presented by the Dunedin History Museum. The museum was created in 1970 as a non-profit organization committed to preserving Dunedin’s rich history through exhibits, programs, special events, and tours.
Non-profit groups such as this often require printing services to provide written materials for their special events.
The upcoming guided tour will take participants along the rough crushed-shell road of Victoria Drive and its historic waterfront homes. A stop outside the homes will include stories and information about their history.
A number of wealthy families from New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Cleveland, and other cities had the large luxurious Victorian houses built as their seasonal homes in the 1880s. Long wharfs were constructed on the waterfront as slips for their expensive yachts.
The residents included the Malone Brothers, and it is believed that the wife of one of the brothers chose to name the street after Queen Victoria to bestow respectability on the neighborhood.
Today, many of the homes along the scenic road remain, although some interiors have been renovated to include modern amenities.
The historic tour of Victoria Avenue will take place on Friday, May 8 from 5:45 pm to 7:00 pm at Edgewater Park in Dunedin. Further information is available on the museum website.
