Miami Womens Club names new president

The Miami Women’s Club has officially appointed its new President – long-time member Shirley Pardon.

Pardon is the first British person to head up the 120-year-old community organization. She has been a member since 2006 and served as vice president from 2016 to the present. The organization is part of the Florida Federation of Woman’s Clubs and the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs. As President, Pardon will oversee the renovation of the club’s Mediterranean Revival building, which sits on the National Register of Historic Places. The renovation has been long in the works, but is scheduled to finally be completed in 2021.

The organization has also had to adapt to holding community events under new health guidelines, often venturing into virtual space. Recent events have included a march to commemorate the 100th anniversary of American women gaining the right to vote, and charitable efforts to distribute meals to those in need. The group has also moved its monthly meetings online to a video-chat format. The Women’s Club works closely with nearby organizations like the Coral Gables Women’s Club and the Miami Rotary Club, the latter of which Pardon is also a member of, for larger volunteer events. Events like these are often community efforts put together by various organizations and businesses, such as advertising provided by Print shops and catering from local restaurants.

Pardon will serve alongside Vice Presidents Metris Batts and Clora D. Adkins-Nelson.
