Maker Faire, an international series of events that celebrates “makers” through hands-on activities and crafts, will be returning to the Miami area with a revamped event for 2020.
This year the festival will be held indoors in Coral Gables, after previous editions were held on the grounds of Miami Dade College. Maker culture, broadly defined, includes everything from traditional crafts to zine and banner printing at Print shops. Maker Faire Miami has a focus on technology and science, with past editions including attractions like robot racing and wearable tech that combines computer equipment with high fashion. The event typically sees over 5,000 attendees with more than 150 “maker” exhibitors.
Already announced are wearable tech designer Sophy Wong, 250-pound BattleBot Witch Doctor, and young makers like 14-year-old Tech-Nic-Allie and VEX iCutie, founded by 12-year-old Abby K. Other attractions include ChipScapes, an art exhibit made from microscopic photos of computer chips, and the Moonlighter Makerspace pavilion in which attendees can get hands-on and collaborate.
While the “Maker Faire” name was created by Maker Media and is licensed throughout the world, the Miami area event is organized by Moonlighter FabLab, a local non-profit that aims to provide access to tools like fabricators and 3D printers.
Maker Faire Miami will take place on April 25 and 26 at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables.
