Iconic Florida tree celebrated in long-running festival

The Coral Gables Tropical Flowering Tree Society will be presenting its 87th Annual Royal Poinciana Fiesta in mid-June.

Dade Heritage Trust will conduct a free walking tour along South Miami Avenue and through Simpson Park beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 8. The tour will begin at the DHT Headquarters, 190 SE 12th Terrace.

That afternoon at 2:00 pm, the Pinecrest Library at 5835 SW 111th Street, Miami will offer a free Poinciana Symposium. Tropical Flowering Tree Society past president and former Gifford Arboretum Director Steve Pearson will be discussing the tree's history, its South Florida origins, and how it has inspired poetry, art, and music. Pearson will also disseminate information regarding horticultural aspects and care.

Garden House at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Road, will be hosting a free Poinciana Fiesta Celebration Part and Reception on Sunday, June 9 beginning at 6:00 pm with trolley tours. Royal Poinciana Punch and other refreshments will be served beginning at 7:00 pm. Queen and Court scholarships and Larry Schokman Book Award recipients will be announced, and poinciana cake will be served. Limited-edition poster printing will be done in time to have Posters available.

Other activities include Coral Gables Library trolley tours on Saturday, June 15, and a Father's Day Bike Ride beginning at the Coral Gables Museum and Heritage Trail Tree Planting on Sunday, June 16.
