Coral Gables seeks opinions on Miracle Mile plans

The Coral Gables municipal government will hold a public workshop this month, with the goal of gathering feedback and coming to a consensus on how to develop the Miracle Mile neighborhood.

One of the goals of the meeting will be to gauge public opinion on a plan for attracting new businesses to the mile and making it easier on existing tenants. The plan will lighten parking requirements for new constructions by allowing for stores to have designated “remote parking” that is some distance from the storefront. The goal is to encourage multiuse buildings that incorporate housing or offices above commercial space, while using a cap on heights and distance from the street to maintain the character of the street.

The development plan and the zoning changes it involves have been the subject of extensive debates, with nearly 25 public meetings or hearings having taken place. A virtual special commission on November 30 was watched by about 280 people, and concluded in a 5-0 vote to hold a further public workshop to provide proper notice to Coral Gables citizens. Local politicians use public forums like this, often promoted by tools like poster printing, to engage citizens and notify them of upcoming changes.

The public workshop on developing the Miracle Mile will take place through digital streaming on January, although the date has yet to be determined.
