Coral Gables Merrick House will be presenting three nights of 100 Voices: Yesteryear Stories of Coral Gables over the next three months.
The series will be informal gatherings discussing the significant places and people in Coral Gables’ first century.
The first night presentation on Sunday, September 17 – Preserve & Protect: The Early Days of Saving Places – will be given by Ellen Uguccioni, the city’s first Historic Preservation director. She will share anecdotes of her stewardship including her involvement in creating the cottage ordinance, resurrecting the Biltmore hotel, and aiding in defining Coral Gables unique look.
On Sunday, October 22, Friends & Family: Merrick Connection in our Midst will have Journalist Helen Muir and Toby Muir, her son, talking about the Biltmore and her friendships with the Merricks.
The final presentation will be on November 12. This one is titled, Preservation Station: Notable Places and People, will be presented by Dona Spain, the former Historic Preservation director. Spain will describe what she likes best about Coral Gables’ distinctive homes and Merrick cottages, along with stories of her meetings with historical figures during her 22 years working at City Hall.
Cities that are especially proud of their architecture such as Coral Springs often have pictures of their showplaces taken to local Stationery printers to be made into Postcards and notecards.
Tickets for each gathering are $5 and the presentations will begin at 4:30 pm at Coral Gables Merrick House, which is at 907 Coral Way.
