Coral Gables cleans ocean and beautifies parking spaces

Residents of Coral Gables will have two green event options over a weekend in mid-September.

The first will be the city’s annual Park(ing) Day, a day set aside to raise awareness of the importance of livable, walkable public environments. Participants reserve one or more on-street parking spaces throughout the city for one day and turn them into temporary public spaces/parks.

These spaces may have sod over tarp, potted plants, benches, chairs, tables, and cultural activities including games and arts and crafts. Other may have easels, art displays, informative displays, Signs, carpets, rugs, blankets or the like.

Park(ing) Day will be from 7:00 am to midnight Friday, September 16th.

The next morning beginning at 9:00 am volunteers will be turning up at various locations around the area to participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s 37th annual International Coastal Cleanup. Our local Keep Coral Gables Beautiful will be spearheading the cleanup at Cartagena Park, Coral Gables by the Sea, Riviera and US1 launch site.

Gloves, garbage Bags, data collection cards, and souvenir tote Bags will be provided. Anyone wanting to use buckets can check with local burger, donut, bakery, or Chinese restaurants for five-gallon buckets they can donate.

This year’s event T-Shirts sporting the 2022 International Coastal Cleanup graphic design hermit crab will be available for $24.99 online during registration.

International Coastal Cleanup 2022 will take place Saturday, September 17th from 9:00 am to noon.
