Workshop introduces wildlife-friendly landscaping

Many would like to make their yard more inviting to wildlife, and an event will soon show how easy this can be.

Creating spaces that welcome wildlife will be the focus of a Washington area presentation coming up in mid-December. It was originally scheduled for an earlier date but has been delayed to allow more people to attend.

A presenter from the Native Plant Circle will lead a discussion of how plant and “hardscaping” choices, landscaping, and other measures can create wildlife-friendly habitats, and it will also introduce the Wildlife Sanctuary program and how property owners can have their yard certified as a Wildlife Sanctuary. It will emphasize the importance of choosing native species. While it is free to attend, the planners have asked everyone interested to sign up in advance.

To thank the participants for registering, everyone will go home with an eastern redbud seedling to install in their own home garden. This is a native species noted for its colorful spring flowers.

Participating in a workshop can make learning about environmental stewardship a lot more fun. Stationery printers will be pleased to prepare species checklists, plant care tip sheets, printed paper Envelopes for seed saving, and many other types of customized materials.

The Meeting House of the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church will serve as the location for this in-person event, which will be held on Saturday, December 13. It will start at 1:00 pm.
