The nations capital leads the list in risk of cybercrime

A new report by Symantec has disclosed that Washington, D.C. is number one in cities across the nation with the risk of cybercrime. The top five in the list is rounded out by San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta and Boston. According to the founder of Sperling’s BestPlaces, Bert Sperling in the report stated that the factors that affect online safety are measurement of consumer behavior in the use of personal computers, smart phones, and e-commerce applications as well as social networking and the number of potentially unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots.

With the second-highest use of smart phones, Washington, D.C. also ranked high in the number of attacks on the web and malware infections which is not surprising considering the that the city is the nation’s political and military capital.

The 2010 report listed Seattle as the riskiest city with Washington, D.C. third yet ranked the highest this year with regards to the use of email and social networking. The number of hours spent on the Internet and the number of Wi-Fi hotspots was also high for Seattle and San Francisco.

The key factor that put Atlanta and Boston on the list in the top five was a high instance of online financial transactions while Detroit was at the bottom of the list with the lowest number of Wi-Fi hotspots and expenditures on personal computers along with low scores for online consumer behavior that could be potentially risky.
