New Metro trains displayed in DC

On Wednesday, October 10, the Metro System in Washington, D.C. unveiled its new series of trains at one of its facilities in Landover, Maryland. The Metro no doubt used flyer printing and poster printing to make the announcement to the metropolitan area of the nation’s capital and the numerous passengers who ride the Metro on a daily basis.

According to Metro general manager, Richard Sarles, the 350 new cars, at a cost of $2 million each, will be replacing the ones that have been running since the Metro opened in 1976. They are expected to go into service sometime in 2014.

In addition to being safer than the original cars, the new cars will improve security with special cameras, have more bars for customers to grab, new seats without arm rests so that they aisles can be wider, and have a non-slip black vinyl floor with specks of blue, white, and red. There will also be new Signs in the cars. Videos and transit information will be displayed on four screens, while current and upcoming station information will be displayed on two more LED Signs, enabling passengers to know their stations without having to look out the window.

The new cars are expected to go into production this winter and the cars will be created in Lincoln, Nebraska. The reaction to the announcement has been favorably received from frequent riders. Some have pointed out that the LED Signs will be particularly helpful for tourists, while the vinyl floor should help prevent the frequent stains currently found on the carpeting.
