October usually means Halloween for children in our area, but for adult athletes it means getting ready for the annual Marine Corps Marathon, now referred to as the ‘People’s Marathon’.
The marathon is the usual 26.2 miles, but the event has added the MCM10K, which is geared to runners of all ages. It will be only 6.2 miles.
The course is a grueling run starting on Route 110 between the Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery. It continues through Rosslyn, Georgetown, and into Rock Creek Park. It then goes through West Potomac Park and crosses over the 14th Street Bridge. The last 10k heads back into Virginia and ends at the Marine Corps War Memorial access road
Seasoned runners will want to ‘Beat the Bridge’ and get to the 14th Street Bridge during the allocated time. ‘The Gauntlet’ at 15th and Independence Avenue will still challenge the best runners. Spectators along the route will want to get their Banners ready to support their favorite runners.
There will also be other activities during the weekend. They will include a MCM Kids Run, Health and Fitness Expo, a celebration concert and the Marine Corp Marathon Finish Festival.
The marathon will be on October 30. Start time will be from 7:55 am until 8:55 am. Times and dates for the other activities can be found on the dcabout.com website.
