Stamford to get puzzled
The 45th Annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament will at the end of March, and anyone may participate.
Challengers solve eight crosswords especially created and edited for the tournament. Scoring will be based on speed and accuracy. The grand prize will be $7,000, along with prizes for winners in over 20 categories.
The Friday evening will see a wine and cheese reception, guest speakers and games.
In-person registration will depend on whether the participants will be competing (which is $270 for the whole weekend, or $220 for all excluding Friday) or getting the puzzles but not competing (which is $215 for the weekend or $165 excluding Friday). Spectator fees for the Sunday playoffs will be $25.
Friday night will include sign-in from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, entertainment and warm-up games until 10:00 pm when the reception begins, and awards for the evening’s games at 11:00 pm.
Saturday’s activities will begin at 9:30 am, with a Puzzle Market between rounds, the first three puzzles from 11:00 am to 12:45 pm, and puzzles four through six from 2:15 pm to 4:45 pm. From 8:00 to 10:00 pm there will be entertainment and more games.
Vendors at events such as this often have their logo design printed on purchase bags.
Sunday’s puzzle 7 will begin at 9:00 am, and contestants for the A, B, and C playoffs will be announced. Puzzle 8 Championship playoffs will be from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm.
