Local arboretum goes online for March

Stamford’s Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens is taking its programs online on Zoom during March.

The first online talk on March 4th from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm will be Spring Ephemerals: Our Native Woodland Wildflowers. Master Gardener Joan Butler will be discussing flora such as Hepatica, Jeffersonia and Bloodroot, their growing conditions, habitat and adaptations.

On the 9th from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm a free webinar from Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum and the Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens will discuss Beech leaf disease. This tree ailment that affects both ornamental and native beech tree species is being studied by discussion leaders Drs. Robert E. Marra and James A. LaMondia.

On the 11th from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm, the first of a 6-week advanced colored pencil botanical illustration class will be led by Kathie Miranda, a multi-media instructor. The workshop will cover color theory, impressed line, blending colors, sgraffito and blending values. Students will work with colored paper, overlapping transparent colors and liquefying colored pencil. Subsequent classes will be on March 18th, 25th and April 1st, 8th and 15th.

On the 16th from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm the first of a 4-week botanical illustration class will also be taught by Kathie Miranda. In this course she will go into detail about flower parts, detailing and tonal application. The other classes will be March 23rd, 30th and April 6th.
